Deacs Suffer Sunday Sweep to No. 18 Hurricanes

MIAMI, Fla. – Finishing out its stay in The Sunshine State on Sunday (March 12), No. 19 Wake Forest women’s tennis visited No. 18 Miami (9-2, 4-1) for a nationally-ranked top-25 matchup. The host ultimately captured a 7-0 sweep over the Demon Deacons.

Wake Forest moves to 11-7 overall on the season, standing at 2-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Conclusion of Sunday’s showing marked the start of a 12-day stretch in which the Deacs will have a break from match competition. A total of 10 contests make up the remainder of Wake Forest’s 2023 regular-season schedule.

 

How it Happened

  • Playing together in doubles for the first time since Jan. 22, Anna Brylin/Jingyi Li split their first two games.



  • On court three, Nevena Carton/Whitley Pate jumped on the board after winning their fourth game.



  • Brylin/Li also made sure their court remained competitive, creating a 3-3 tie after staying poised through a lengthy rally.

  • Down five games, Mia Ahmad/Casie Wooten refused to let up, winning three in a row quickly.



  • Miami won in first doubles (6-3).

  • Carton/Pate tied things up at 5-5 in their match after court one had wrapped.

  • A win by the Hurricanes in second doubles clinched the team’s opening point.

  • Miami went up 2-0 in the match after being awarded a walkover in sixth singles.

  • After trailing early, Li found a slight groove in winning two of her next three games in fifth singles.

  • The Hurricanes upped their lead to 3-0 after completing a victory on court three.
