Ann Arbor, Mich. – The Penn State women’s tennis team won its match over Iowa, 4-3, in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.
The Blue and White will compete in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Friday, April 26 at 2 p.m. against Ohio State. This is the Nittany Lions first Big Ten Tournament win since 2015.
DOUBLES
The Hawkeyes struck first and grabbed the doubles point.
At No. 1, Sofiya Chekhlystova and Olivia Dorner fell in their match to Daianne Hayashida and Vipasha Mehra, 6-2.
Jordina Cegarra and Alina Lebedeva evened out the matches by winning against Barbora Pokorna and Pia Kranholdt, 6-3.
Yvonne Zuffova and Karly Friedland lost a tough their match to Marisa Schmidt and Nikita Vishwase, 7-5, to ultimately drop the doubles point for Penn State.
SINGLES
The Nittany Lions won four singles matches to clinch the win to move on to the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament.
At No 2, Yvonne Zuffova fell to Marisa Schmidt, 6-3, 6-4.
Sofiya Chekhlystova won her matched against Daianne Hayashida, 6-4, 6-4, to put the Blue and White on the board.
Jordina Cegarra tied the match at 2 all with her win over Pia Kranholdt, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
To put Penn State ahead, Olivia Dorner defeated Barbora Pokorna, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.
The score became tied yet again when Alina Lebedeva dropped her match to Nikita Vishwase, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
Within minutes, Karly Friedland clinched the match for the Nittany Lions with her win over Vipasha Mehra, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4.
