Women’s Tennis Season Ended In NCAA First Round Loss To Princeton

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va – The No. 27 Huskies women’s tennis team’s season came to an unexpected finish in the first round of the NCAA tournament Saturday in a 4-3 loss to No. 39 Princeton.

Princeton will advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament to play the winner of today’s first round match between No. 5 seed and host Virginia and Long Island University.

The Huskies fought every moment and started with momentum right from the doubles point. No. 1 Alexia Jacobs/Astrid Olsen (6-3) and No. 3 Melissa Sakar/Catherine Gagnon (6-4) provided victories to clinch the doubles point.

The underclassmen secured wins for the Huskies, with Alexia Jacobs finishing her match quickly in two sets, 6-3, 6-4.

Astrid Olsen and Sarah-Maude Fortin dropped their matches on 3 and 5, respectively, as Princeton tied things up 2-2. Erika Matsuda took her match on the top court in three sets over the Tigers’ Velaga, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.

Melissa Sakar’s match on 4 was tight in the second set but Princeton’s Jessup tied the match once again at 3-3 with a 6-3, 7-5 two-setter.

The pressure was on Dariya Detkovskaya on court 6 as the match became tied and she entered her third set almost simultaneously. Detkovskaya’s second set entered a tiebreak, which the senior secured with a 7-4 advantage. Elbaz edged the senior out 6-3 in the third.
