The University of Utah women’s tennis team defeated the Portland Pilots in a close match-up , 4-3, on neutral territory. The match took place in Vancouver, Washington on Friday afternoon.
Utah began the day off with Kaila Barksdale and Marcela Lopez securing their doubles match on court three against Pilot duo Meagan Pearson and Alaia Rubio Perez, 6-0. Portland was able to come back on court two with their victory over Samantha Horwood and Katya Townsend 6-4. Anastasia Goncharova and Madison Tattini kept a close game with Iva Zelic and Sally Pethybridge, but ultimately lost the match 6-4 and putting the Utes one point down.
Lopez kicked off singles strong, earning Utah their first point against Pearson, 7-5, 6-2. Portland took back the lead on court six when Horwood was defeated by Rubio Perez, 6-4, 7-5.
Barksdale set the Utes even with the Pilots once again after winning in the third set against Rimona Rouf, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Tattini was able to also defeat her opponent, Pethybridge, in the third set, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5). Townsend lost to Zelic, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, leaving the game-clinching point to court four. There, Goncharova claimed victory over Aleksandra Dimitrijevic, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, to win it all for Utah.
