MSU Hosts Western Michigan Friday

EAST LANSING, Mich.  Michigan State men’s tennis returns to the MSU Indoor Tennis Center for a match against Western Michigan on Friday, March 3 at 4 p.m.

MSU heads into the match at 4-5 (0-0 B1G) after dropping a close match to No. 37 Notre Dame earlier on Monday, Feb. 27, 4-3.  After dropping the doubles point, the Spartans rattled of two straight wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles with freshman Ozan Baris and sophomore Max Sheldon taking straight-set victories. Junior Graydon Lair’s comeback win at No. 5 singles gave the Spartans a 3-2 lead, but Notre Dame eventually clinched the dual with two-consecutive three-set victories at No. 6 and No. 3 singles for the victory.

The Broncos head into Friday’s match at 4-5 (0-0 MAC) after sweeping Illinois State at home on Feb. 24, 7-0. WMU is led doubles by Benjamin George and Pierce Brogan who own a 6-2 record as a pair this season, playing a majority of their matches at No. 3 doubles. George also leads the Broncos in singles wins (6), while sophomore Anton Arzhankin sits tied for second in singles wins and is currently riding a three-match win streak at No. 2 singles.

The Spartans currently have two players ranked in the latest singles and doubles Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I Men’s tennis rankings released on Feb. 21. Baris and Sheldon, who still rank at No. 29, picking up their third ranked win of the season against Notre Dame’s No. 47 ranked pairing of Sebastian Dominko and Connor Fu. 

Up next, the Spartans will head to Tempe, Arizona, to participate in the Arizona State Spring Break Tournament, on March 10-12.
