ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Fifth-seeded Illinois suffered a 4-1 loss to No. 4 seed Wisconsin on Friday in the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Tournament quarterfinals. The Fighting Illini’s second match of the event took place outdoors from Michigan’s Varsity Tennis Center. Illinois’ Friday appearance marked its 16th straight quarterfinals.
Illinois moved to a 17-9 overall record with the loss. Wisconsin is now 18-5 on the season.
Wisconsin would open the scoring in Friday’s match, claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Kasia Treiber and McKenna Schaefbauer earned a 6-1 win to improve to 10-2 overall and in duals, which includes an 8-2 record at No. 3 doubles.
The Badgers claimed four of six opening sets on the singles courts as Josie Frazier and Treiber won their first frames for the Illini. Illinois responded and tallied four second sets. Wisconsin claimed both completed third sets.
UW would take a 2-0 lead, claiming the point at No. 2 singles before Illinois would get on the board.
Treiber won her sixth straight match, claiming a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles. First set action was tied 2-2 before the junior rattled off the final four games. In set two, after trailing 0-1, Treiber fired off four straight games en route to the 6-3 decision. Treiber’s win pushed her overall record on the season to 18-13 including a 15-8 mark in duals.
Wisconsin responded with three-set wins at No. 3 and No. 1 singles, respectively, to take a 4-1 decision.
