No. 4 women’s tennis downs No. 5 Illinois

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 4 seeded Wisconsin defeated No. 5 seeded Illinois, 4-1, in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinal today, April 26.

Doubles took almost no effort with Xinyu Cai and Ellison Reynoldson taking down their foes, 6-1. With No. 3 singles dropping, No. 82 Alina Mukhortova and Maria Sholokhova picked up the pieces to grab the point, 6-3.

UW had a dominant presence in the first sets, winning four out of the six being played. Mukhortova proceeded to breeze through her second set, 6-1, to earn the Badgers’ second point of the day. With Ariel Johnson dropping in straight sets, four matches were forced into thirds. It was No. 83 Maria Sholokhova who gave the UW the winning point in her third set.

Reynoldson/Cai def. Ferrari/Fraizer: 6-1

Schaefbauer/Trieber def. Garcia Gross/Cataldi: 6-1

No. 83 Maria Sholokhova def. Heuser: 6-1, 2-6, 6-3

Alina Mukhortova def. Schaefbauer: 6-4, 6-1

Taylor Cataldi def. Martinez: 6-2, 2-6, 6-1

Fraizer retired Xinyu Cai: 6-4, 6-7 (2-7)

Trieber def. Ariel Johnson: 6-2, 6-3

Ellison Reynoldson retired Ferrari: 6-4, 2-4

The Badgers will have a rematch against No. 1 seeded Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament Semifinal tomorrow, April 27, at 11:00 a.m. (CT).

Michigan traveled to Wisconsin earlier this month. The Badgers dropped the doubles point, but forced a handful of singles matches into third sets. The Wolverines ultimately took the win, 4-0.
