THE FLATS – No. 69 Georgia Tech men’s tennis (9-5, 0-0 ACC) begins the conference season this weekend by hosting two nationally-ranked ACC opponents. The first match of the weekend will be against No. 25 Wake Forest (13-5, 0-0 ACC) on Friday, March 3 at 5 p.m. Tech will then face No. 39 NC State (6-4, 0-0 ACC) on Sunday, March 5 at 12 p.m.
The Jackets have already competed against four ranked opponents and almost achieved two upsets over Stanford and South Carolina. Wake Forest is currently 3-3 against ranked opponents and NC State has a 0-3 record versus ranked opponents. All three teams share a loss to South Carolina, but the Jackets had the closest score with the Gamecocks.
In the most recent ITA Division I Men’s Tennis Rankings, Tech was ranked at No. 69 and earned their first team national ranking of the spring season. Three Jackets are still represented on the Top 125 Singles and Top 60 Doubles lists – No. 34 Andres Martin, No. 47 Marcus McDaniel, No. 85 Keshav Chopra and No. 21 Martin & McDaniel.
Last time out, Tech added two more wins and improved to a 9-5 record. Despite losing the doubles point, the Jackets started last weekend with a 5-2 win over Kennesaw State. Tech’s success carried over to Sunday as the team returned home for another 5-2 victory against UNC Wilmington.
The top performers for Tech so far this season have been Martin, McDaniel and Chopra. Martin has won eight of his last 10 matches while McDaniel and Chopra have won seven of their last 10 matches. However, several other players are on a multiple match winning streak in singles play. Martin, Rohan Sachdev and Elias Shokry are all on a three-match winning streak.
The doubles pair of Martin and McDaniel are currently on an impressive nine-match winning streak. The standout duo for Tech has a 2-1 record against nationally-ranked opponents and has won nine of their 10 matches together.
