SEATTLE – The 25th-ranked UCLA Bruins posted a 4-0 win over the host Husky men’s tennis team today on a cool, breezy day at Bill Quillian Stadium. The match was tighter than the final score indicated but the Dawgs could not quite swing the momentum in their favor. UW had its two-match Pac-12 win streak snapped.
In doubles play, Cesar Bouchelaghem and Dzianis Zharyn cruised to a 6-1 victory at the top spot, but UCLA had a 6-1 win of its own at No. 2 over Brett Pearson and Nedim Suko. It came down to court three, where Heman Nama and Ivan Sodan had a deciding point chance to get back on serve, trailing 3-5, but UCLA’s Hoogmartens/Nanda won that point to clinch doubles with the 6-3 win.
In singles play, the Bruins won four of the six first sets, with Zharyn and Sodan each winning 6-4 sets for U-Dub. 22nd-ranked Govind Nanda got the first singles point, stopping Bouchelaghem on court No. 1, 6-0, 7-5. At No. 6 singles, Pearson dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Jorge Plans Gonzalez. Then the match was ended at No. 4, where Suko lost a 6-4, 6-2 match to Alexander Hoogmartens.
Zharyn was up a set and at 5-5 in set two against 120th-ranked Spencer Johnson when play was suspended. Sodan was just starting a third set at No. 5 against Gianluca Ballotta, and Han-Chih Lin trailed 3-6, 4-5, at No. 3 singles against Giacomo Revelli.
Washington (8-11, 2-3 Pac-12) has its final regular season road match next week, heading to Eugene for a rematch with the Ducks on Saturday, Apr. 13. Then UW will be back home to close the regular season hosting Arizona on Apr. 19 and Arizona State on Apr. 20.
