BERKELEY – The California men’s tennis team garnered honors for its work in the classroom this week, when the Intercollegiate Tennis Association named the 2022-23 Golden Bears an ITA All-Academic Team and awarded ITA Scholar-Athlete status to Philip Hjorth and Mikey Wright.

A squad needs to compile a grade-point average of 3.2 or above to be named an ITA All-Academic Team, while student-athletes need a GPA of 3.5 or above to claim ITA Scholar-Athlete honors.

Hjorth, who graduated from Cal in May with a bachelor’s degree in political economy, collected All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention in his final season. He produced a 13-5 singles record and a 15-6 doubles mark as a fifth-year senior, with his last singles and doubles wins coming in the Bears’ NCAA first-round victory over LSU. A product of H rsholm, Denmark, Hjorth began his college career at Pacific and played for the Tigers for his first two seasons before transferring to Cal.

A rising junior, Wright partnered with John Kim in the fall of 2022 to capture the doubles title in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Cal. The Berkeley native is the son of Peter Wright, Cal’s former Director of Men’s Tennis, and younger brother of Cal men’s tennis alumnus Thomas Wright and Cal women’s rowing alumna Carly Wright.
