Women’s Tennis Wins Doubles, Drops Match 5-2 To No. 9 Cal

SEATTLE – The Washington women’s tennis team (15-8, 4-4 Pac-12) picked up a doubles victory over the 9th-ranked California Golden Bears Friday afternoon but it wasn’t enough as the Huskies dropped their fourth conference match, 5-2.

Friday afternoon’s match was the second meeting with Cal for the Huskies this season, as the Bears came to Seattle for ITA National Team Indoors in February. The Huskies couldn’t handle the Bears either time, losing earlier this season 4-1 in the final day of championship play.

Today’s match started strong for the Dawgs in doubles action. A Husky loss on court 2 was no trouble for Washington, as No. 69 Astrid Olsen and Alexia Jacobs defeated the 22nd-ranked Cal pair of Viller Moeller and Mushika handily, 6-3.

No. 78 Melissa Sakar and Catherine Gagnon snagged a 6-4 dub on court 3 to clinch the doubles point.

The doubles point was the only one on the board for the Dawgs for a while, as the only singles win came at the end of the match with Sakar’s victory on court 4 in two long, straight sets (7-6, 7-5). Today was Sakar’s 18th singles win of the season.

The Dawgs will be back home for the final time at Quillian Tennis Stadium on Sunday, April 14 for a senior day matchup with No. 3 Stanford. First serve is set for noon.
