CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina women’s tennis team, ranked second nationally, posted a pair of 7-0 wins over East Carolina and Campbell in Monday’s doubleheader at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, improving to 4-0 on the season.
The Tar Heels’ win against the Pirates marked a major milestone for Brian Kalbas, who reached his 500th victory as Carolina’s head coach. The winningest coach in Atlantic Coast Conference women’s tennis history now owns an impressive 500-101 (.832) record at UNC.
Match 1 vs. East Carolina, 7-0
UNC started the first match against East Carolina by handily earning the doubles point. Reese Brantmeier, the nation’s No. 1 recruit playing in her first match as a Tar Heel, joined forces with Abbey Forbes to defeat Ines Bachir and Alisha Hussain, 6-1, in the first position before the duo of Reilly Tran and Elizabeth Scotty clinched it with a convincing 6-0 win on court two over Martina Muzzolon and Isabella Rivera Ortiz.
Securing the first singles point for the home team was No. 58 Scotty who took down Muzzolon, 6-1, 6-0, on the third court. Continuing her strong rookie debut was Brantmeier, who topped Bachir by a score of 6-1, 6-3 on court two.
Crawley, the top-ranked singles player in the country, got her first clinch of the young season after besting Rivera Ortiz, 6-2, 6-1, on court one. Deciding to play the match out, wins from Sophia Patel, Lindsay Zink and Sarah McClure led the Tar Heels to a 7-0 sweep over the Pirates.
