WACO, Texas – Valerie Glozman and Connie Ma secured All-America status to highlight Stanford’s participation at the NCAA Individual Championships in Waco. This was the first year of a two-year pilot program in which the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Individual Championships are held in the fall instead of the spring.
Glozman, seeded fifth, made a run to the quarterfinals before being knocked out Friday morning by Oklahoma’s Julia Garcia Ruiz, 6-1, 6-1. The freshman beat Zdena Safarova (Boise State), Lily Jones (Michigan) and Theadora Rabman (North Carolina) to advance to the final eight in her first NCAA action. She finished the fall with a 13-2 record, including a 7-2 mark against ranked opponents.
The No. 6 seed, Ma advanced to the Round of 16, beating Ekaterina Khayrutdinova (FIU) and Mao Mushika (California) in straight sets before falling to Nicole Khirin (Texas A&M) in three. Ma was 12-4 in the fall and earned singles All-America status for the third time in her career.
With the switch in schedule for the individual championships, All-America honors are given to those advancing to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship in November or finishing in the Top 20 of the final ITA Singles rankings in May.
Alexis Blokhina, appearing at her first NCAA Individual Championships, won a first-round match against Valeria Ray (Vanderbilt).
Glozman and Ma also appeared in doubles, but lost their first match in the Round of 32 against Wisconsin’s Alina Mukhortova and Maria Sholokhova.
