Women's tennis heads to ITA Kickoff


The University of Utah women’s tennis team has been selected to play at the ITA Kickoff in Chapel Hill, NC. The Utes will play their first match against #50 Charlotte on Friday, Jan 27 at 2 p.m MT. 

Depending on whether Utah secures a win or not, they will then play #3 North Carolina or #64 Maryland on Jan 28.

LAST TIME OUT

Utah held their first home match against the Idaho State Bengals on Sunday, Jan 24. The Utes were able to win 7-0 to maintain their undefeated record this season. Utah swept all three matches in doubles to earn the first point. 

In singles, freshmen, Kaila Barksdale and Marcela Lopez, were the first to finish, defeating their opponents, 6-3, 6-0 and 7-5, 6-1, respectively. Clinching the match, Anastasia Goncharova followed closely after with her victory, 6-3, 6-3. On court two, Madison Tattini claimed victory against Idaho State player, Megan Lang-Gould, 6-3, 6-4. Samantha Horwood won after going to a third set, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Closing out the day, Katya Townsend beat her opponent, 6-4, 6-2. 7(7)-6(4).

HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA

Ric Mortera is entering his fourth season as the head coach of the Utah women’s tennis program in 2022-23. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 35-30 overall record. During the 2021-22 season, Mortera had the Utes reaching new heights. The team started a program best 9-0, which included wins over Big Ten foes Indiana and Minnesota, as well as Pac 12 opponent Washington State.

SCOUTING CHARLOTTE

Charlotte is currently ranked 50th in the ITA rankings. The 49ers are currently 2-2 in their spring season. They took on their first ranked opponent, #6 Duke, on Jan 15 and were defeated 0-4. Charlotte currently has two ranked doubles teams. Margaux Maquet / Lucia Quiterio are currently #21 while Kaavya Sawhney / Ruxi Schech are ranked #57.
