Virginia Men's Tennis | Virginia Advances to NCAA Second Round with 4-0 Win

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The Virginia men’s tennis team (23-5) advanced to the second round of the 2024 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship with a 4-0 victory against NJIT (19-6) on Friday (May 3) at the Virginia Tennis Facility at the Boar’s Head Resort.

Virginia won the doubles point and took singles courts two, three, and five. Senior Iñaki Montes won the clinching point.

The Cavaliers will host VCU (16-9) in the second round on Saturday at 4 p.m. Admission is free.

Seniors Chris Rodesch and Jeffrey von der Schulenburg opened the match with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Montes and grad student James Hopper clinched the point with a 6-4 win on the top court.

Senior Alexander Kiefer put UVA up 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 win on court five. Freshman Dylan Dietrich followed with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at three. Montes closed out a 6-2, 6-1 win on court two.

  • Virginia is the No. 3 seed in the championship but is ranked No. 2 in the latest ITA team rankings
  • Alexander Kiefer extended his singles win streak to 14 straight victories
  • Dylan Dietrich extended his win streak to eight straight victories
  • Virginia took the first four first sets in singles, but NJIT won tiebreakers to decide first sets on courts one and six
  • This was NJIT’s first-ever NCAA Championship appearance
  • VCU defeated Princeton 4-2 in the first match of the day
  • Princeton is No. 32 in the ITA rankings. VCU is No. 40
  • Virginia is 18-11 all-time against VCU and has won the last nine meetings. The Rams’ last win against UVA was in 2000
