LA JOLLA, Calif. — The University of Michigan men’s tennis team had two doubles pairs reach the Round of 32 at the 2022 Pacific Coast Doubles Championship on Friday, March 3, at the La Jolla Tennis Club.

Patorn Hanchaikul and Mert Oral opened with a perfect 4-0, 4-0 score over Shan Sondhu and Taran Sondhu in the round of 164. In the afternoon, the Wolverine duo topped Cooper Gordon and Joshua Robinson (Villanova) 4-1, 4-2. They wouldn’t be able to get by Christopher Papa and Rohan Murali in the round of 32 falling by matching 4-1 scores. It marked their first loss of the season, as the pair is now 5-1 in doubles play.

Nicholas Steiglehner and Bjorn Swenson won their first two matches as well. The duo earned matching 4-0 scores over Brian Wilber and Shane Fisher in the opening round and topped Bennett Turner and Mai Gao (Boston College) 4-0, 4-1. It was Butler’s Alvaro Huete Vadillo and Thomas Brennan that ended the duo’s run in a third-set tiebreaker, 7-4 after splitting the first two sets 5-3, 4-1.

The Wolverines will begin Big Ten play in two weeks when they travel to Ohio State to face the Buckeyes on Sunday, March 19.
