Utah Men's Tennis Earns Two Wins vs. Cal Poly, Eastern Washington


SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men’s tennis team returned to action at the home base this Sunday in a double-header against Cal Poly and Eastern Washington, walking away with two wins. The Utes started off strong with a 4-0 win over the Mustangs and continued their victorious day with a 7-0 win against the Eagles.

Match 1: Utah 4, Cal Poly 0

The squad began the day with lively doubles play. Here, the Utes secured the first match on court one where Berk Bugarikj and Patrik Trhac defeated the Mustang tandem 6-2. The finish line got muddled when the Cal Poly duo in the No. 2 spot downed Utah’s Franco Capalbo and Geronimo Espin Busleiman in a 7-5 match. The point was decided on court three, with Francisco Bastias and Bruno Caula giving their all in a 7-6 faceoff with a 7-2 tiebreaker and awarding the Utes with the first point of the match.

As the match moved into singles, the Utes continued their great performances. The second point of the match came on court six, where Bugarikj downed his opponent in a swift 6-3, 6-3 match. Soon after, Capalbo followed in his teammate’s footsteps, finishing Mustang Joe Leather with score 6-3, 6-2. The match point came on court three as Bastias took the upper hand against Colter Smith 6-2, 6-2, granting Utah the win. Matches on courts one, four and five remained unfinished.

Match 2: Utah 7, Eastern Washington 0

The Utes had their second stride of the day as they faced the Eastern Washington Eagles. In doubles play, the Utah squad swiftly secured the point, with a 6-1 finish from Capalbo and Busleiman on court one followed by 6-1 from Bastias and Caula on court two. On court three, Utes Jayson and Michael Blando led 5-2 but their match was unfinished.

As the team moved to their final individual matches of the night, Jayson Blando cruised though his match, finishing first on court six with score 6-2, 6-1. The third point of the match came on court four when Julio recovered the first set 6-4 and swept EWU’s Tyler Dalos 6-0 in the second set.

The match point came on court two as Capalbo won his second match of the day, downing his opponent 6-2, 6-1. Soon after, Bruno Krenn also defeated his rival on court five, finishing 7-5, 6-1. On court one, Espin Busleiman played out his match and won 6-3, 7-6(7-4). Finally, on court three Caula downed EWU’s Erik Sarlvik 7-5, 6-3.
