Sean Maymi Announced as Michigan Men’s Tennis Coach

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics Warde Manuel announced on Thursday (July 27) the hiring of Sean Maymi as head coach of the Michigan men’s tennis program.
“We are thrilled for Sean Maymi to return to Michigan and lead our men’s tennis program,” said Manuel. “Sean played a key role in eight of our NCAA Tournament appearances and has seen success wherever he’s been. We look forward to welcoming Sean, Samantha and their family back to Ann Arbor and to supporting the future of this incredible program.”
“I am beyond grateful for this opportunity to lead the men’s tennis program,” Maymi said. “Thank you to Warde and Elizabeth (Heinrich) for all their hard work during this process. Ann Arbor is a very special place for me and my family and I can’t wait to get to work. Go Blue!”
Maymi (pronounced MY-me) makes his return to Ann Arbor after spending five seasons as the head coach of the men’s tennis team at the University of Nebraska. He will take the reins as the 16th head coach of the 130-year-old Wolverine program.
Maymi steadily built the Huskers program since his arrival in 2018, with the team having its best two seasons in 2022 and 2023. They finished fifth in the Big Ten in both seasons with a record number of conference wins with five. This past season, the team finished No. 30 in the ITA national rankings, the third highest in program history.
A familiar face to Ann Arbor, Maymi served two successful stints as associate head coach of the Wolverines from 2006-11 and again from 2015-18. He helped to guide the Wolverines to eight NCAA Tournament appearances in his nine seasons, reaching the round of 16 twice.
During his first stint, under then-head coach Bruce Berque, Maymi and the Wolverines made five straight NCAA appearances and climbed to No. 8 in the ITA rankings in both 2008 and 2011. He was named the ITA Midwest Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in 2008. It was under his leadership that Brian Hung and Matko Maravic earned All-America status in doubles in 2007, with Evan King capturing three All-America singles honors (2011, 2012, 2013) and earning Big Ten Athlete of the Year twice.
