COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sydni Ratliff of the Ohio State women’s tennis team added to her trophy case Monday, as the freshman was named ITA Rookie of the Year for the Midwest Region. The native of Columbus, a Columbus Academy graduate, also earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors this season.
Ratliff is the fifth Buckeye to earn ITA Midwest Region Rookie of the Year accolades, all since 2014. Isabelle Boulais (2019), Gabriella De Santis (2014), Francesca Di Lorenzo (2016) and Shiori Fukuda (2018) also were recognized with the award.
She was an NCAA qualifier in both singles and doubles, joining Kristy Dascoli as the only Buckeyes to compete in singles and doubles as a freshman. She was the fourth Buckeye freshman to make an NCAA singles appearance and the third to earn a doubles berth.
Ratliff ended her freshman season ranked 71st in singles and 47th in doubles with Irina Cantos Siemers. She reached a high of No. 43 in singles and No. 15 in doubles in March. Cantos Siemers and Ratliff claimed the ITA Midwest Regional doubles championship.
A three-time Big Ten Athlete of the Week, Ratliff notched a 28-11 singles record in her first collegiate season and had an 18-6 dual record, with an 8-2 mark during the conference regular season for the Big Ten champion Buckeyes. In doubles, Ratliff notched a 25-18 overall record, going 13-10 in dual matches.
