SALT LAKE CITY – The No. 9 ranked USC Women’s Tennis team wrapped up their final Pac-12 road match with a 5-2 victory over Utah on Sunday, April 7 at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
With the win, USC improves to 16-6 overall. The victory also keeps the Women of Troy in the running for the conference’s regular season title as No. 14 UCLA also boasts a Pac-12 record of 7-1. No. 5 Stanford and No. 10 Cal also carry just one conference loss as well.
USC captured the doubles point on Sunday following wins on courts two and three in doubles. First on court three, the No. 54 ranked duo of Parker Fry and Grace Piper beat Utah’s Sara Akid and Yuhan Liu 6-2. The Utes answered with a win on center court as Ana Cruz and Marcela Lopez beat the No. 14 ranked USC duo of Eryn Cayetano and Emma Charney 6-2. With all eyes on court two, Lily Fairclough and McKenna Koenig went the distance against Samantha Horwood and Kat Lyman, winning a tiebreak 7-6(5) to haul in the doubles point.
Carrying a one-point advantage into singles play, USC’s Grace Piper was first to score as she downed Kaila Barksdale 6-2, 6-3 on court three. Utah struck back as Kat Lyman beat No. 68 Eryn Cayetano 6-2, 6-2 on court four – snapping Cayetano’s undefeated dual match record. No. 100 Snow Han answered as she downed Marcela Lopez 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 on center court to put the Trojans within one point of a victory. Trojan No. 28 Emma Charney subsequently fell 6-1, 7-5 to Utah’s Yuhan Liu on court two.
The match was clinched on court five as McKenna Koenig resiliently fought to take down Utah’s Emma Kamper 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
The remaining match was played out as Sloane Morra fought to take down Sara Akid 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) on court six.
USC is back in action on Friday, April 12 as the Trojans host Oregon for a 12 p.m. match at Marks Stadium.
