STILLWATER, Okla. – Vanderbilt’s Célia-Belle Mohr and Anessa Lee fell to Georgia’s Aysegul Mert and Dasha Vidmanova in the NCAA Doubles Championships semifinals on Friday.
“What a memorable week in Stillwater for the Dores, leaving as NCAA singles quarterfinalist and doubles semifinalists,” said Vanderbilt head coach Aleke Tsoubanos. “Anessa and Célia-Belle performed so well as a pairing this season from start to finish. They were selfless when we made a late season change to our doubles line up, knowing they were likely, but not guaranteed, to qualify for individuals and they were supportive of what was best for the team. Their run to the final four together was a special one and I will miss seeing them on court together.”
The Commodore pair kept up with the Bulldog tandem initially, but ultimately they dropped the first set to Mert and Vidmanova. In the second set, they went point-for-point with their Georgia opponents for three games, but it was not enough, and they fell to No. 14 Mert and Vidmanova in two sets.
Commodores Lee and Mohr entered the event ranked No. 33 in the country. Mohr was named to the First-Team All-SEC for the second consecutive year, and Lee earned Academic All-District honors from College Sports Communicators.
“Anessa has been one of the toughest competitors I’ve had the privilege to coach,” said Tsoubanos. “She put her heart and soul into this program and always represented VU with class. I’m incredibly proud of the career she has had at Vanderbilt and to call her an All-American.”
“Célia-Belle has been an absolute rock for the team this year. She put together another season of over 30 singles wins and has established herself as one of the best players in the country. Now a three-time All-American, her run to the quarterfinals was so fun to watch this week. What she has put together in singles and doubles has been remarkable and I couldn’t be prouder of her.”
