Cabezas and Tomase Fall in NCAA Doubles Semifinals

STILLWATER, Okla. – The doubles pair of Sofia Cabezas and Elza Tomase from the Tennessee women’s tennis team dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to the top-seeded pair in the nation, Savannah Broadus and Janice Tjen of Pepperdine, in the NCAA Doubles Championship semifinals.

The Lady Vols, after three victories in as many days, fell one win shy of reaching the NCAA final. Pepperdine won the first five games of the match and Tennessee was unable to climb out of the early hole against the ITA’s second-ranked duo.

The Tennessee pair, ranked No. 11 in the country, ends the season with a 16-8 overall record with six of those victories coming against ranked opponents. Cabezas and Tomase notched their highest-ranked triumph over No. 6 Mary Stoiana and Mia Kupres from Texas A&M,7-6 (5), on March 17. They clinched ITA All-America status by reaching the NCAA quarterfinals.

Cabezas and Tomase were the first Tennessee tandem to reach the NCAA Doubles Championship semifinals since 2013, making them the first pair to do so in the Alison Ojeda era. The last Tennessee duo to make it that far, 11 years ago, was No. 4 Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely.

RESULTS:

#2 [1] Broadus/Tjen def. #11 Cabezas/Tomase (TENN), 6-2, 6-1
