Men’s Tennis Blanks Illinois, 4-0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Karl Poling won the clinching match at No. 4 singles to send the 14th-ranked University of North Carolina men’s tennis team to a 4-0 win over Illinois on Saturday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

Carolina improved to 5-1 this seaon with the victory. Illinois fell to 6-4.

The Tar Heels won the doubles point to start the match. Poling and William Jansen won, 7-6 (7-2) in a tie-breaker at a No. 3 doubles. Mathis Debru and Oliver Okonkwo, the No. 48-ranked doubles team in the nation, defeated Ryan Seggerman and Casey Kania (NC) 7-6 (7-5) at No. 1. Brian Cernoch and Benjamin Kittay clinched the point with a 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 2 doubles.

Carolina swept three singles matches to complete the victory. Jansen won first at No. 3 singles in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, over William Mroz. Cernoch beat No. 95 Hunter Heck by a 6-4, 6-0 score to make the score 3-0, and Poling closed it out with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kenta Myoshi.

Carolina will return to action on Sunday at 2:15 p.m. against No. 3-ranked TCU.
