Leong Named B1G Women’s Tennis Player Of The Week

EVANSTON, Ill. (March 15, 2023) – Northwestern sophomore Justine Leong (Hong Kong/Diocesan Girls’ School/Claremont McKenna) has been named the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday.  Leong, who is receiving the accolade for the first time, is the first Wildcat to take home the weekly honor since Julie Byrne during the 2019-20 season.

Leong dazzled in Northwestern’s clash with No. 28 Illinois, winning in straight sets (7-6 (7-4), 6-2) over No. 100 Ashley Weah.  The Hong Kong native won a marathon first set, battling back to win in a tiebreak, before carrying momentum over to the second set as she coasted to victory.

Leong, who has split her first two Big Ten singles matches of 2023, has seven wins to her name this season, a mark that trails only Briana Crowley’s eight individual victories.  She is also part of the No. 41 ranked doubles tandem, alongside Christina Hand, in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Doubles Poll.

Currently sitting at No. 74 in the ITA Team Rankings, Northwestern (5-8, 1-1 B1G) steps out of conference play for the final time this season when it visits No. 10 Duke on Wednesday, March 22.
