Antonaki Advances In ITA Southern Regional

BATON ROUGE, La. – Things could have not gone better than they did for No. 52 Emmanouela Antonaki in the ITA Southern Regional on Sunday.

MSU’s Antonaki won her singles match that pushed her into the semifinals of the event hosted by Louisiana State University.

Antonaki started things off on Sunday by downing LSU’s Maggie Cubitt 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals

“Emmanouela [Antonaki] played a very solid match today,” head coach Daryl Greenan said. “She was dominant from start to finish and is playing with a higher level of confidence in each round here. She has another tough opponent tomorrow so she will have to continue to push herself to make her first regional final.”

Bulldog Sydney Hrehor took on Jiayun Zhu from Tulane in the singles consolation round. Zhu took the first set 6-1 and was up 3-0 in the second before Hrehor pulled out of the match due to injury.

In doubles, Gia Cohen and Antonaki faced LSU’s Anastasiya Komar and Nikita Vishwase in the quarterfinals. It was a close battle between the Bulldogs and Tigers, but Antonaki and Cohen fell 8-6 to the LSU duo.

“Emmanouela and Gia [Gohen] also played at a high level in the doubles,” Greenan said. “They put themselves within a couple points of beating a very good team.”

Antonaki will take on Komar of LSU Monday at 10 a.m. CT in the singles semifinals of the ITA Regional.
