Women’s Tennis Sends Three to the Finals

LAS VEGAS – The University of Utah women’s tennis team finished another successful day at the Jolene Watanabe Classic hosted by UNLV. Utah sent three to the draw finals, two singles, and one doubles team. 
 
“I am excited for the group’s opportunity to finish the fall season on a high note tomorrow,” said head coach Ric Mortera. “We have a couple of players in the finals and overall a solid slate of competition to test us on the last day. I am looking forward to seeing how we perform.” 
 
In doubles, the Utes were able to claim a win in both the first and second consolation flight. Anastasia Goncharova and Marcela Lopez are moving onto the flight 1 finals after defeating Dianna Hayashida and Ipasha Mehra from Iowa, 6-1. 
 
Samantha Horwood and Katya Hersh were able to also move onto the finals of the second flight consolation round after winning their match, 7-6, against Myah Petchey and Lillian Mould from Oregon.
 
Both Goncharova and Lopez will go to the finals in their respective flights in singles. Goncharova defeated Molly Helgesson from the host team, UNLV, 6-4, 4-2. Lopez was able to claim her second win of the day against her SDSU opponent, Dariya Detkovskaya, 6-4, 6-4.
 
Horwood was defeated in the third flight consolation by Peppi Ramsted from LBSU, 6-2, 6-3.
Hersh also lost in the flight four consolation round after a tough three sets against Oregon’s Karin Young 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.
 
Utah will be back on the courts tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 13.
