LAST TIME OUT
UCLA quickly picked up the first four points en route to a 4-3 victory against Rice Feb. 10 at The Santaluz Club in San Diego. Fangran Tian clinched the win for the Bruins in straight sets, following similar efforts by Elise Wagle and Vanessa Ong. Each member of the trio triumphed without giving up more than two games in a set. Tian and Wagle also each contributed to a doubles win and the day’s initial point. The Owls prevailed in each of the final three completed matches – all of which were decided by 10-point, third-set tiebreakers.
UCLA VS. CSUN
UCLA women’s tennis holds an 8-0 all-time record against CSUN. The programs met most recently in 2016, when the Bruins recorded a 4-1 win in the second half of a doubleheader. Alaina Miller and Kristin Wiley teamed to clinch the doubles point with a 6-4 victory in a make-or-break Court 3 match. A first-set retirement in singles play gave the Matadors their only point before Catherine Harrison, Wiley and clincher Kyle McPhillips ran off straight-set wins.
IN THE RANKINGS
The latest ITA National Singles and Doubles Rankings came out Feb. 8 and feature four Bruins. Leading the way on the singles list is Ava Catanzarite, at No. 52. Fangran Tian is listed at a career-best No. 70, while Kimmi Hance checked in at No. 82. The tandem of Hance and Elise Wagle rose to No. 9 for doubles – a career high for both – thanks in part to claiming the ITA Southwest Regional Championships top prize.
AVA CAN-TANZARITE
Sophomore Ava Catanzarite, who turned in a majority of her 2022 singles results on Court 6, is unbeaten in three Court 3 decisions this year. The Pittsburgh native is 10-5 overall going back to fall tournament play. Catanzarite, herself slotted as high as No. 42 this season, is 5-2 versus nationally-ranked singles opponents during the 2022-23 campaign. She knocked off No. 80 Anna Supapitch Kuearum of Iowa State…
