Katja Wiersholm and the Bears start the new season on Sept. 30 with the Cal Fall Invitational.

BERKELEY – The California women’s tennis program released its 2022-23 schedule Wednesday, with the Golden Bears slated to play in up to six tournaments this fall and with Cal – the 2021 Pac-12 Conference regular-season champion – starting conference play in early March. The Bears will begin the regular season when they host the Cal Fall Invitational from Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts.

Cal’s Haley Giavara and Valentina Ivanov are the defending top-flight doubles champions and Jessica Alsola is the defending top-flight singles champ – while Erin Richardson and Makenna Thiel claimed the Gold doubles title – from the 2021 Cal Fall Invite.

Those Bears who qualify for the 2022 national tournament will compete from Nov. 2-6 in San Diego, while another Cal contingent plays in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational from Nov. 4-6 in Tempe, Arizona.

The Bears will continue tournament play early in the New Year, when they travel to the Hawaii Invitational from Jan. 6-8 – last year Cal lost just two matches over three days in Honolulu – and then the Bears will host the Cal Winter Invitational from Jan. 13-15. Giavara and Ivanov are the defending doubles champions in the Bears’ winter event.

Cal will start the dual-match season with a pair of nonconference home matches, as the Bears play UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 20 and Pepperdine on Jan. 21 at Hellman. Nonconference action continues in the ITA Kickoff Weekend, with…
