LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – The Utah women’s tennis team opened up play on Wednesday at the ITA Mountain Regionals hosted by UNLV. The Utes went 4-1 on the day in the main draw, which saw the Utes freshman go 3-0 on the day.
Opening the day with doubles, the Utah duo of Madison Tattini and Anastasia Goncharova received a first-round bye moving to the round of 32.
The freshmen duo of Kaila Barksdale and Marcela Lopez matched up with Ava Neyestani and Elinor Beazley of Northern Arizona. In a back-and-forth match, the Utes came up clutch with an 8-7 (3) victory. This was the first collegiate win for both freshmen, and they advanced to the round of 32.
The freshman continued to have success in singles action on the day. Lopes picked up her second win of the day with her win in singles. She played Courtney Swift of Air Force, 6-0, 6-1, for a perfect 2-0 day.
Her teammate, Barksdale, picked up a singles win against Wiem Boubaker of Nevada. After Barksdale dropped the first set, 6-3, she rebounded in the second set. She tied the match at one set each after taking the second set, 6-2, forcing a third set. Barksdale came out on top, winning the third set 6-1, claiming the match.
Goncharova won the fourth win for the day for the Utes. She matched up with Nikol Dobrilova of Wyoming, and the Utes took the first set, 6-3. Goncharova and Dobrilova were in a highly contested second set, but Goncharova fell short 7-6. Going to a third set, Goncharova was victories in the third set, 6-4, win winning the match.
Tattini was in action for the Utes as she matched up with Claudia de Velasco of Denver. Tattini came up short as she was defeated 6-4, 7-5.
Thursday will see the second round of doubles (32) and two rounds of singles, the Second Round (32) and Round of 16, with action starting at 10 a.m. MT. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
