Wisconsin begins Big Ten Play


MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin men’s tennis team (1-12, 0-0 B1G) heads to Michigan to play the No. 42 Michigan Wolverines (6-10, 0-0 B1G) Friday, Mar. 22 and the No. 23 Michigan State Spartans (14-3, 0-0 B1G) Sunday, Mar. 24. Friday’s first serve against the Wolverines will be 4 p.m. from the Varsity Tennis Center and first serve versus the Spartans will be at 11 a.m. from the MSU Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday.  

Here are five things you should know before Wisconsin faces Michigan and Michigan State:

1. SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES: The No. 42 Michigan Wolverines are 6-10 overall and 5-2 on their home court. Michigan is on a three-match losing streak, with its most recent loss coming to No. 1 Ohio State in Ann Arbor in its annual non-conference rivalry match. The Wolverines have two nationally-ranked singles players, Gavin Young at No. 14 and Jacob Bickersteth at No. 92. Young, a senior from Minnesota, is 11-10 this season and coming off two straight victories. Bickersteth, a senior from Michigan, is 15-9 this season. The two players combine for Michigan’s top doubles pair, ranked at No. 49 in the country with a 5-4 record. 

Last season, Wisconsin and Michigan met up inside Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Mar. 24, as the Wolverines pulled away with a 5-2 victory. The No. 52 ranked Badgers gave the No. 5 Wolverines a run for their money and despite taking the doubles point, Wisconsin surrendered five of six singles matches. 

2. SCOUTING THE SPARTANS: The No. 23 Michigan State Spartans went 14-3 in non-conference play and are 7-1 inside MSU Indoor Tennis Center. The team began the duals season on a 12-match win streak but lost its last two matches to No. 9 Arizona and No. 46 Cornell. Michigan State has three ranked singles players, No. 12 Ozan Baris, No. 20 Ronnie Hohmann, and No. 124 Max Sheldon. Additionally, it has four different doubles pairs ranked in the top 125. Max Sheldon/Ozan Baris are No. 7, Ozan Baris/Ronnie Hohmann are No. 53, Ozan Baris/Aristotelis Thanos rank as No. 56 and Ronnie Hohmann/Sebastien Collard are No. 124. 

The Badgers and Spartans last played one another Mar 26, 2023, and UW took the 5-2 victory on its home court. Wisconsin secured the doubles point, with Robin Parts/Sebastian Vile winning at the No. 2 match and Jared Pratt/Mihailo Popovic winning at No. 3. The Badgers followed up doubles play by…
