Will Grant Surges to First Pro Final at M15 Tallahassee Tournament

The junior won four matches to reach the final and finish as the runner-up.

GAINSEVILLE, Fla. – Fresh off the ITA Regional hosted by Florida State, Will Grant had unfinished business in Tallahassee and stayed to compete in the M15 Tallahassee tournament. The stay was well worth it for Grant, as the junior made it all the way to the final for the first time in his career at a professional tournament.

Grant faced the 2022 SEC Freshman of the Year, Filip Planinsek from Alabama in the first round and the match went the distance. He collected a bagel in the first set and downed the ITA’s No. 13 and ATP No. 1138 ranked Planisek 6-0, 5-7, 6-4.

Next up was Florida State’s Loris Pourroy where Grant turned out a straight set win in the second round. He converted on three break points in a back-and-forth first set to win 6-4 and won the first two games of the second frame to comfortably secure the victory 6-4 over the ITA No. 30 ranked Pourroy.

In the quarterfinal, a contest with the 2015 NCAA Singles Champion Ryan Shane aligned. Grant got the best of the ATP No. 1007 ranked Shane in the first set 6-3 before the Virginia alum retired and cemented Grant’s place in the semifinals.

Another Seminole stood in Grant’s path to the final and the Boca Raton, Fla. native was ready once again. The first set proved to be the toughest, but Grant outlasted Florida State’s Andreja Petrovic 7-6 (4). Grant was down 4-1 in the tiebreak and rattled off six straight points to win the frame. He would complete the victory taking the second set 6-4 over the ITA No. 114 Petrovic to advance to his first professional final.

Grant bowed out in the finals to former Seminole and ATP No. 694 Alex Knaff 6-3, 6-0. He returns to Gainesville as the team prepares to host the Gator Fall Invite beginning this Friday, November 4.
