Utah Hits the Road to Take on USC and UCLA


After a week-long break, the University of Utah women’s tennis team is headed to Los Angeles. The Utes are set to take on the USC Trojans on Friday, March 31 at 2:30 p.m. before taking on the UCLA Bruins on Saturday, April 1 at 1 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT

Utah took on the Oregon Ducks on March 19th and lost 2-4. The Utes were unable to take the doubles point after Katya Townsend and Samantha Horwood were defeated on court two, 6-0 and Kaila Barksdale and Marcela Lopez lost on court three, 6-1.

Utah’s two match points came from Madison Tattini with her victory, 7-5, 6-2 and Horwood who took her match into three sets and came out with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 victory. 

ITA NATIONAL RANKINGS

Head coach Ric Mortera has been able to keep the Utes ranked for the second consecutive year. In the most recent ITA poll, Utah women’s tennis was able to come in at 59th in the nation.

HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA

Ric Mortera is entering his fourth season as the head coach of the Utah women’s tennis program in 2022-23. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 42-36 overall record. During the 2021-22 season, Mortera had the Utes reaching new heights. The team started a program best 9-0, which included wins over Big Ten foes Indiana and Minnesota, as well as Pac-12 opponent Washington State. He helped the Utes sign a top ten recruiting class nationally (No. 9)  in 2022 and was named the ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year.

SCOUTING USC

USC is 10-6 this season and is currently 35th in the nation. Trojan players, Madison Sieg, Eryn Cayetano, and Snow Han are all ranked in singles at 5th, 35th and 83rd, respectively. Sieg and Cayetano are 22nd as a doubles team, and Han along with teammate, Naomi Cheong, are 33rd. 

SCOUTING UCLA

UCLA has won six of their eleven matches. They currently sit at 31st in the ITA rankings. Bruin, Fangran Tian is 23rd in singles, followed by teammates, Kimmi Hance at 78th and Ava Catanzarite at 87th. Hance also plays on a…
