Utah Defeats Cal 4-2 for First Time in Program History

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men’s tennis team closed another weekend of conference play with a historic 4-2 match against the Cal Golden Bears. The teams have faced each other in the past, but this was Utah’s first time defeating Cal.

The day started off with doubles, where competition got intense very quickly. On court one, Patrik Trhac and Berk Bugarikj fell 6-4 to the Golden Bears. On court three, Francisco Bastias and Bruno Caula defeated the Cal tandem in a 6-2 match. The doubles point was to be decided on court two, where Franco Capalbo and Geronimo Espin Busleiman put up a fight but ultimately fell short 6-2 against Ryder Jackson and Lucas Magnaudet.

Things were off to a quick start as the match moved into singles. On court four, Caula fell to Cal’s Derrick Chen 6-1, 6-3, awarding the Golden Bears with their second point. The tide took a turn when Utah’s Bastias defeated Carl Emil Overbeck 6-4, 6-2 on court four. Soon after, teammate Trhac also took a victory, finishing 6-4, 6-1 and bringing Utah to a 2-2 tie with Cal.

The tie was broken on court two as Busleiman downed Golden Bear Ryder Jackson 6-3, 6-4, putting the Utes at an advantage. The match was clinched on court five where Bugarikj took a decisive victory after a three-set match. He dominated the first set 6-1, but dropped the second 7-6(8-6) and made an incredible comeback during the third set, finishing 6-2 and awarding the Utes with their first win against Cal.
