For the first time in school history, the University of Utah men’s tennis team is Pac-12 Regular Season Champions after downing UCLA 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.
The match started with UCLA capturing the doubles point advantage. Utah fell in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots but Utes duo Francisco Bastias and Bruno Caula ended with a 6-3 win over Jeffrey Fradkin and Aadarsh Tripathi in the No. 3 spot.
The No. 5 spot was the first to finish where UCLA picked up a win. Utah’s Caula defeated Azuma Visaya with 6-3, 6-2 scores in the No. 4 spot. Patrik Trhac picked up a win that tied up the overall match 2-2. Trhac defeated Timothy Li 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 3 spot.
UCLA reclaimed the edge with a win at the No. 1 spot. With the overall match score at 3-2 Geronimo Espin Busleiman and Franicsco Bastias were the two Utes left to finish. Busleiman defeated Giacomo Revelli in the No. 2 spot with 7-6, 7-5 scores.
The match came down to Bastias in the No. 3 spot. He took his match into three sets. In the first set he fell 1-6 but picked up a 6-4 win in set two. After sitting tied at 5-5, Bastias pulled ahead for a 7-5 win in the third set and gave Utah the overall match win 4-3.
The last time Utah won a conference title was with the Mountain West in 2008.

Utah will take on USC Sunday at 2 p.m. (MT) before heading to the Pac-12 Championships April 26-29 in Ojai, Calif.
