TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devils’ top-ranked doubles team is officially San Diego bound.
After a terrific season alongside one another in 25 spring matches, Domenika Turkovic and Patricija Spaka have been selected as one of 32 doubles teams to compete at the ITA Fall National Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, California, with play beginning Wednesday, November 2.
The duo is recently removed from an impressive early October showing at the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, North Carolina, where they steamrolled their way to the semifinals.
They stacked three wins in three days, defeating UNLV’s Molly Helgesson/Zita Kovacs (6-2, 6-3), Fresno State’s (Yinglak Jittakoat/Matilde Magrini (7-6, 4-6, 10-6) and South Carolina’s Ayana Akli/Sarah Hamner (4-6, 6-3, 10-3).
They followed that up with a run to the quarterfinals at the ITA Regional Championships two weekends ago in San Diego. To get there, they beat Cal State’s Zhytelna/Turchak (8-5) and USC’s Charney/Lee (8-5) before running into UCLA’s Wagle/Hance in the quarters (def. 8-3).
Turkovic and Spaka compiled a 10-5 record on doubles Court 1 for the Sun Devils last season. They were one of 32 selections to the NCAA Doubles Tournament, and concluded the season with a No. 39 national ranking and were No. 2 in the Southwest Region.
The Championships are the grand finale to the fall collegiate tennis season and feature 64 of the nation’s top collegiate singles players (32 men and 32 women) and 64 doubles teams (32 men’s team and 32 women’s teams), according to the ITA. The event is in its fifth year, having replaced the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships beginning in 2017.
The 2022 Fall National Championships will be streamed through the Cracked Racquets live stream, which can be found here.
