BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team gave No. 10 Duke everything they could handle but came up just short, 3-4, at home on Friday afternoon.

The Hokies had trouble finding much of anything to build upon starting out in doubles. Erika Cheng and Özlem Uslu showed promise on Court 2 scrapping to a 4-4 score before the match was called after Duke claimed the doubles point.

Tech really began to find their stride in singles with several matches going into decisive third sets. Uslu shined on Court 2 continuing her brilliant play, battling back in multiple sets before dominating the third-set tiebreak 7-2 to claim a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(2) win over No. 47 Cameron Morra for her first ranked win of her career. Semra Aksu followed suit climbing back in the match after dropping the first set to secure a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory. Cheng closed the match strong for Tech with a three-set win of her own 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Uslu’s victory marks the first ranked singles win of the season for Tech.
