SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Head Men’s Tennis Head Coach Roeland Brateanu has signed a contract extension through June of 2028, Director of Athletics Mark Harlan announced today. Brateanu earned Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Utes to a share of the 2023 Pac-12 regular season title and a berth in the Pac-12 tournament championship match. Utah advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row.
“Roeland has done a tremendous job to build a championship program in one of the country’s most competitive conferences,” Harlan said. “He has put our men’s tennis program on an upward trajectory, continuing to raise expectations, and I’m excited to be able to extend his contract.”
Brateanu heads into his 10th season at the helm of Utah men’s tennis in 2023-24, holding a 156-86 career record.
“I’d like to thank Mark Harlan and the Utah leadership team for giving me the support and opportunity to continue working at Utah,” Brateanu said. “I’m truly honored to be at my alma mater and lead and push to even greater heights.”
Brateanu earned his first 2023 Pac-12 Coach of the Year award after leading the team to its first regular season title in school history with a 6-2 record. Brateanu was named the ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year for the fifth time in his tenure at Utah.
During the 2022-23 season, Utah posted a 24-6 overall record including a 14-match winning streak. Utah defeated No. 7 Harvard and climbed the ITA Ranks to end the season at No. 17 in the nation. Utah also had several players ranked in the Top 100 with Geronimo Espin Busleiman ranked No. 46. Brateanu also coached the doubles team of Patrik Trhac and Berk Buharikj who ranked as high as No. 5 during the 2022-23 season.
Utah made a deep run in the Pac-12 tournament, reaching the title match for the first time in school history.
Utah earned an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history and picked up a 4-1 win over Old Dominion in the first round. In his nine seasons, Utah has made four NCAA Tournament appearances and has recorded the most NCAA wins in school history.
