XATIVA, Spain – Incoming men’s tennis freshman Pedro Rodenas claimed the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Men’s Singles 15K Futures title over the weekend in his home country of Spain.
Rodenas battled through tough competition and defeated the No. 4, 5 and 6 seeded players to earn the crown. During his quarterfinal match against Diego Augusto Baretto Sanchez, he outlasted his countrymate in a three-set thriller. Rodenas dropped the opening frame 6-4, but rebounded for 6-4, 6-0 victories in the second and third set, respectively, to claim the match.
In the semifinals, Rodenas registered a 6-0 win in the opening frame against Max Alcala Gurri. The second set was cut short, and Alcala Gurri was forced to retire, handing the future Blue Devil a spot in the finals.
During the championship match, Rodenas bested Jorde Martinez 7-6 (5), 6-2 to record the first ITF Futures title of his young career. Also with the tournament win, he will break into the top 800 in ATP rankings.
