Penn State Women’s Tennis falls 7-0 to Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va.– The Penn State women’s team opened the 2022 spring season with  a 7-0 defeat to Old Dominion in Norfolk Sunday afternoon.  

 

Doubles 

Old Dominion earned doubles points with wins across all three courts. 


On court one, Karly Friedland and Alexandra Nielsen fell 6-0 to Tatsiana Sasnouskaya and Alesya Yakubovich. In the No. 2 double pairing, Gabby O’Gorman and Sofiya Chekhlystova fell to Yulia Starodubtseva and Alexandra Viktorovitch, 6-2. Olivia Ryan and Yvonne Zuffova fought hard in the No. 3 bout, but fell to Marina Alcaide and Shahar Biran, 6-3. 

Singles 

Old Dominion’s momentum carried over to singles play as they it collected singles wins across the board.  

Penn State’s Sofiya Chekhlystova put up a strong fight against Yulia Starodubtseva but ultimately fell in a three-set match. Chekhlystova took the first set 6-2, lost the second 6-0 and fell short in tiebreaker, 10-8. 

Court No. 2 housed a close match between Alexandra Nielsen and Sofia Johnson. Nielsen held a tight first set but was defeated in the end, 6-4, 1-0. 

Alina Lebedeva worked to find her first colligate singles win, but fell in a close match to Alesya Yakubovich, 6-3, 3-0. 

Freshman Yvonne Zuffova came up just short to Marina Alcaide, 7-5.
