No. 59 Virginia Tech falls to No. 3 Wake Forest, 2-5


BLACKSBURG – No. 59 Virginia Tech (7-3, 0-2) drops second ACC contest against No. 3 Wake Forest (10-4, 1-1), 2-5.   

For the second match in a row, the Hokies would be resilient in doubles play, despite facing strong competition. After making a change in the lineup, Manuel Goncalves and Hugo Maia would slide in to the third doubles position, falling to Luciano Tacchi and Luca Pow 1-6. Due to injuries, Matt Harper and Alex Ix would start together on court two, falling in the match that would seal the point for Wake Forest, 6-7 (5-7). Ryan Fishback and Maxime St. Hilaire would have their match halted on court one, where they were in a tight contest against the No. 3 pairing of DK Suresh and Holden Koons, ending their bout 6-6 (2-4). 

Manuel Goncalves would fill in at the sixth position in Tech’s lineup, falling to Holden Koons, 1-6, 0-6. Freshman Benjamin Pomeranets would get action in the second ACC match of his young career, falling to Luca Pow by scores of 3-6, 0-6. 

The Demon Deacons clinched the match when Maxime St. Hilaire fell on court two against No. 53 DK Suresh, giving Wake Forest their fourth team point. Alex Ix would also fall on court four by scores of 2-6, 3-6 while facing Matthew Thomson. 

The Hokies would have two upset victories in the match. The first would come with No. 59 Ryan Fishback winning a three-set thriller on court one, upsetting No. 25 Filippo Moroni 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7). 

Hugo Maia would find himself against No. 117 Luciano Tacchi on court three, defeating the ranked opponent 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 for Tech’s second upset of the day in the final match of the weekend.
