Philip Hjorth clinched Cal’s win at UC Davis, as the Bears finished with 11 wins in 12 singles matches on Saturday.

BERKELEY/DAVIS – The 29th-ranked California men’s tennis team won twice in dominant fashion on Saturday, trouncing San Francisco, 5-1, at home and then sweeping past UC Davis, 6-0, on the road for its third and fourth straight victories of the season. Siddhant Banthia clinched the win over the Dons, while Philip Hjorth secured the win against the Aggies.

Cal improved its record to 6-2. UC Davis now has a 4-4 record, and USF is 1-5.

To start the day, Cal hosted USF at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Rain delayed the match, with the teams eventually opting to start play with singles and eventually eschewing doubles. The Bears did not drop a set through the first four matches, and in that fourth match Banthia clinched the Cal victory with a 6-4, 6-4 result over the Dons’ Moritz Hoffmann on court three. Lucas Magnaudet later completed Cal’s 5-1 win over USF when he defeated Johan Garpered, 6-2, 7-6(20, on court six.

The Bears drove to face the Aggies in Davis, where they again dispensed with doubles. Hjorth defeated Mitchell Davis, 6-4, 7-6, at court-six singles to clinch the victory, as Cal dropped just one set at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Bears also got wins from the 106th-ranked Yuta Kikuchi, who beat Andrei Volgin, 6-1, 6-1, on court one, and the 101st-ranked Ryder Jackson, who bested Ryan Torres, 6-1, 6-2, on court two.

Cal next competes on March 2, when the Bears play at San Diego and also begin play in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship in La Jolla.

Pro Bears: Ben McLachlan and Andre Goransson also won on Saturday, with the Cal alumni defeating Luis David Martinez and Cristian Rodriguez, 6-3, 6-4, in the doubles final of the Monterrey Challenger ATP tournament in Mexico.
