Malibu, Calif – The No. 24 USC women’s tennis team started off their NCAA tournament run with a bang, sweeping UNLV 4-0 Friday morning at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center to advance to the second round.
USC grabbed their first point with a strong showing in doubles play. No. 58 Snow Han and Naomi Cheong defeated Cindy Hu and Coco Zhao 6-1 on court two and Emma Charney and Nathalie Rodilosso defeated Zita Kovacs and Aura Fang 7-6 (7-0) on court three to lock in the point.
The Trojans carried their momentum into singles play. No. 11 Maddy Sieg scored first, sweeping Molly Helgesson 6-0, 6-2 on center court to put the Trojans up two. Han scored next, defeating Kovacs 6-3, 6-1 to bring the Trojans within one, before Charney defeated Hu 6-3, 6-1 to finish off the sweep.
When play paused, the Trojans were ahead on all three of the remaining courts. No. 43 Eryn Cayetano held a 6-2, 5-3 lead on court three in her first match in nearly three weeks, and Grace Piper and Sloane Morra won the first set on their courts.
With their victory, the Trojans advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament. They will face No. 9 Pepperdine tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu. The match is a familiar one to the Trojans, with USC falling to then No. 8 Pepperdine last season in Malibu during the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
