KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Up 3-1 against No. 30 Wake Forest in the NCAA Tournament opener, the Sun Devils couldn’t put away the Demon Deacons, falling 4-3 on Friday afternoon at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
Wake Forest rallied and grabbed wins on Courts 2, 4 and 6 to send the Sun Devils back to Tempe. It halts a streak of three consecutive NCAA Tournaments in which they’ve advanced beyond the First Round (no tournament in 2020 due to COVID-19 cancellation).
The Sun Devils began the afternoon in an early 1-0 hole, due to a pair of Demon Deacon doubles victories on Courts 1 and 2. Marianna Argyrokastriti and Rachel Hanford, paired alongside one another for the first time this season, were leading, 5-4, at the time of the abandonment of their match.

The Sun Devils end the 2022-23 campaign at a 17-7 clip, good for their second straight 17-win campaign. It’s just the 13th time under head coach Sheila McInerney they’ve won 17 matches or more and the first time in consecutive seasons since 2013-14.
Though that’s it for the Sun Devils as a team this spring, the attention will now shift to the NCAA Doubles Tournament, where the country’s No. 20 ranked duo of Turkovic/Spaka were one of 32 teams selected to compete.
Play will be held May 22-27 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, following the conclusion of the NCAA Team Championships.
