Katja Wiersholm won in straight sets Saturday to send the Bears to Sunday’s final in Norman.
NORMAN, Okla. – Katja Wiersholm won in straight sets to clinch the California women’s tennis team’s 4-0 victory over Illinois in the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday and send the 19th-ranked Golden Bears (1-0) into a Sunday final against host and 16th-ranked Oklahoma (3-2). The winner of Sunday’s 2 p.m. CT match advances to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in February.
Illinois is now 3-2.
Cal’s 14th-ranked Hannah Viller Moeller and Mao Mushika improved their record to 18-2 with a 6-0 shutout of Josie Frazier and McKenna Schaefbauer at court-one doubles. The duo of Jessica Alsola and Valentina Ivanov followed with a 6-2 win over Kida Ferrari and Violeta Martinez on court two to clinch the doubles point for the Bears.
In her first dual match as a Bear, Lan Mi – a junior transfer from Cornell – doubled Cal’s lead to 2-0 when she beat Ferrari, 6-1, 6-2, at court-six singles. Ivanov, a senior, increased the lead to 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Kasia Treiber on court three. The 36th-ranked Wiersholm, a junior who’s 13-2 this season, defeated Frazier, 6-1, 6-2, at court-four singles to end Saturday’s match.
Cal has a 1-0 record in the all-time series with the Sooners, who reached Sunday’s ITA Kickoff Weekend final when they shut out 23rd-ranked Central Florida, 4-0, on Saturday morning.
