Australia’s Nick Kyrgios pleaded guilty to common assault charges during a hearing in Canberra on Friday, but saw the charges dismissed by the court shortly thereafter.
The 27-year-old could have faced a maximum two-year sentence for shoving his previous girlfriend. He had previously argued that his case should be dropped, citing his own mental health issues, but according to the New York Times he and his legal team withdrew that bid.
The matter comes to a close without Kyrgios seeing a conviction or a criminal record.
The incident occurred in January of 2021 when Kyrgios shoved his then girlfriend Chiara Passari during a dispute as she tried to prevent him from leaving in an Uber.

The couple reconciled and Passari did not report the incident until December of 2021.
Kyrgios, the World No.20, who recently had surgery on his left knee, said the following on Instagram.
“I was not in a good place when this happened, and I reacted to a difficult situation in a way I deeply regret,” he said. “I know I wasn’t OK, and I’m sincerely sorry for the hurt I caused.”
He added: “Mental health is tough. Life can seem overwhelming. But I’ve found that getting help and working on myself has allowed me to feel better and to be better. … I now plan to focus on recovering from injury and moving forward in the best way possible.”
