MSU Moves On To Quarterfinals In Milwaukee


MILWAUKEE, Wis., – Mississippi State men’s tennis is moving on to the quarterfinals of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic in both singles and doubles.

On Friday, the Bulldog tandem of Dusan Milanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez began the morning by dispatching the Illinois duo of Tyler Bowers and Jeremy Zhang 6-2 to move on to the quarterfinal round.

Milanovic and Sanchez Martinez are set to square off against Anton Arzhankin and Benjamin George of Western Michigan on Saturday at 3 p.m. The winner will advance to the semifinals later that afternoon at approximately 4.

Milanovic and Sanchez Martinez both carried their momentum over to their respective singles courts on Friday morning. Milanovic – ranked 36th nationally and the top overall seed in the tournament – took down Nebraska’s Leo Linquet 6-2, 6-3 while Sanchez Martinez was a also a straight-set winner with a 7-5, 6-4 victory against Vignesh Gogineni of Yale in the opening round.

Milanovic added another win to his day by downing SMU’s Louis Cloud 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to move on to Saturday’s quarterfinal showdown with junior Daniel Sancho Arbizu of Denver at 9 a.m. The victor will advance to the semifinals scheduled for Saturday at noon.

Sanchez Martinez came up short in his semifinal bid, falling to SMU’s Jerry Barton 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 16. The MSU sophomore will play a singles consolation match on Saturday at around 10:30 a.m.
