TULSA, Okla., – A pair of Mississippi State freshmen picked up their first collegiate wins on Sunday.
Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes and Radomir Tomic each collected a singles victory in their prequalifying consolation matches at the ITA All-American hosted by Tulsa.
Ferrer Guimaraes fell in his first set 4-6 to UT Chattanooga senior Peyton Gatti but rallied back to claim the next two sets 6-3, 6-2.
Although Tomic earned a win last month at the ITF Champaign 15K, Sunday’s victory was the first that counted towards his collegiate record. The Bosnia and Herzegovina native eased past senior Chen En Tsai of Northern Illinois 6-2, 6-2.
Monday marks the start of singles and doubles qualifying at the nine-day tournament. Benito Sanchez Martinez will start the day for the Bulldogs at 8 a.m. against Michigan senior Nino Ehrenschneider. No. 68 Petar Jovanovic takes the court at 10:30 a.m. against Togan Tokac of Texas A&M.
Tokac played as a true freshman last season at Florida before transferring to the Aggies in the offseason.
MSU will also have a pair of doubles duos in action against ranked opponents on Monday as the 64-team main draw gets underway.
Ferrer Guimaraes will team with Dusan Milanovic against Columbia’s 53rd-ranked tandem of Nicolas Kotzen and Max Westphal at 2 p.m. Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez are set to square off against No. 59 Murphy Cassone and Martin Vergara Del Puerto of Arizona State at 2:30 p.m.
A win by Ferrer Guimaraes and Milanovic would move them into a second-round match on Monday at 4:30 p.m. and a victory by Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez would have them playing again at 5 p.m.
