“Lunacy” Djokovic Can’t Compete at US Open

Count John Isner among the players who assert it’s ludicrous Novak Djokovic isn’t permitted to play the US Open.

Wimbledon champion Djokovic, who is unvaccinated and says he has no plans of taking the jab, would not be permitted entry into the United States under current regulations requiring foreign visitors to the States to be vaccinated for COVID-19.

Asked on Twitter by Seth Dillon: “Are there any active tennis players urging the U.S. to let [Djokovic] play?” Isner replied: “Yes. Complete lunacy he can’t compete as of now.”

Tennys Sandgren, who is unvaccinated like Djokovic, shared his tweet from June when he called the USTA out for failing to fight for an exemption for 21-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic.

Goran Ivanisevic, Djokovic’s coach, told La Repubblica there’s “zero hope” the U.S. government will ease restrictions and permit Djokovic entry to play the season’s final Grand Slam.

The US Open starts on August 29th. Djokovic officially withdrew from next week’s National Bank Open in Montreal because he is unvaccinated and Canada does not allow international travelers who are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 into the country.
