SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Senior Garrett Johns recorded another victory on Thursday, advancing him to the quarterfinal round of the 2022 ITA National Fall Championships.
No. 1 Johns outlasted Max Basing of Stanford in a three hour, three-set thriller. Basing claimed a 7-6 (6) tie-break win in the opening frame but Johns rallied back for 7-5, 6-4 victories in the final two sets to record the win.
Johns next faces Utah’s Geronimo Busleiman on Friday at 10 a.m. PT in the quarterfinals at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
Duke’s doubles pair of Michael Heller and Andrew Zhang concluded their time at the national event after falling on Thursday in the round of 16 to No. 3 seed Alexander Jong and Lui Maxted of TCU 7-6 (2), 6-4.
