CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Will Jansen gutted out a come-from-behind win at No. 3 singles to clinch the victory as No. 13 North Carolina beat No. 16 Wake Forest, 4-3, in men’s action at the Carolina Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill.
Jansen fought off a match point on deuce, eventually clawing back by winning four consecutive games after trailing, 5-3, in the third set. He beat Matthew Thomson, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 at No. 3 singles to give UNC a decisive, 4-2 lead.
The Tar Heels won their eighth match in its last 10 outings to improve to 15-2 overall and 7-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference action this season. Wake fell to 21-8, 5-3, dropping its second match of the weekend after previously losing at Duke on Friday.
Casey Kania and Ryan Seggerman came from behind to clinch a spirited doubles point for Carolina. The duo, ranked No. 19 nationally, trailed Luciano Tacchi and Jurabek Karimov, 3-0, at No. 1 doubles before roaring back to win, 7-6 (7-4).
Jansen and Karl Poling had started doubles play by winning, 6-3, at No. 3. Wake’s Filippo Moroni and Thomson responded with a 6-3 victory at No. 2 over Benjamin Kittay and Brian Cernoch.
Tacchi won the first singles decision of the day, 6-1, 6-0 over Tar Heel Logan Zapp at No. 5, making the score 1-1. Seggerman regained the lead for Carolina with a dominant, 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles over Moroni, only to see the Demon Deacons tie the score at two apiece with Cernoch’s loss at No. 1 to 11th-ranked Melios Efstathiou, 2-6, 6-7 (4).
Poling (No. 100) won a matchup of ranked opponents when he beat the No. 103-ranked Karimov at No. 4, 7-6 (4), 6-1.
